Dr. Niamey Wilson Named Breast Surgery Leader at Medical Group

The Hartford HealthCare Cancer Institute has appointed Dr. Niamey Wilson director of Breast Surgery Quality and Research and breast surgery division leader with the Hartford HealthCare Medical Group.

Dr. Wilson grew up in Manhattan before attending Hamilton College in upstate New York, where she majored in mathematics with a focus on topical theory. From there, she returned to New York, earning her medical degree from Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons. She then completed a general surgery residency and breast surgery fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. While there, she was accepted into the prestigious Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Clinical Scholar Program and earned a master’s of science in health policy.

As director of breast surgery quality and research, she will help us advance the work already being done to make the latest clinical trials available to our patients.”

Besides her clinical and administrative work with Hartford Healthcare, Dr. Wilson is a member of the American Society of Breast Surgeons, the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the Society of Surgical Oncology and the American College of Surgeons.

Dr. Wilson’s goal is to merge personalized, attentive patient care with the highest quality and most rigorous approaches to breast cancer treatment. In that capacity, she is responsible for all breast surgery trials through the Cancer Institute’s charter membership in the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Alliance.

She has authored book chapters on breast surgery and her research has focused on the determinants of surgical decision-making from both patient and provider perspectives. Her commitment to women’s health extends beyond the office. She has earned a national reputation as a role model for female physicians and an outspoken advocate for patient rights.
