How Backus, Windham Hospitals Emerge From COVID Crisis Even Stronger

Nobody saw 2020 coming. But despite challenges posed by a worldwide pandemic, Backus and Windham hospitals were able to meet the needs of the community — and form an exciting new vision for the future.

The past fiscal year included everything from the life-saving efforts of frontline healthcare workers during COVID-19 to new healthcare services and facilities in Mystic and Waterford, hospital leaders said Nov. 10 at the 2020 annual meeting of Backus and Windham hospitals, appropriately held via Zoon for the first time.

Backus and Windham Hospital President Donna Handley outlined what she called COVID 1.0 in the region, and explained how the hospitals are prepared to work through the recent surge, what she is calling COVID 2.0.

She also highlighted the significant growth opportunities for both hospitals as they added close to 20 providers, opened a new facility with a wide range of healthcare services in Mystic and broke ground on another building in Waterford that will be home to men’s health, primary care, rehabilitation services and gastroenterology.

Handley also had a positive outlook for 2021.

“Backus (shown above) and Windham Hospitals will be a places where customers feel they get the best, most compassionate care and that employees can confidently recommend our services to friends and family because they love working here and are providing the highest levels of care,” she said.
