Hartford HealthCare Receives Top Grades From Leapfrog

November 10, 2021

An independent national watchdog organization has given four Hartford HealthCare hospitals “A” grades for safety in the latest round of national rankings.

Backus Hospital, Charlotte Hungerford Hospital, Hartford Hospital and the Hospital of Central Connecticut are among only eight hospitals in the state to receive an “A” Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade for the fall of 2021.

This national distinction recognizes each hospital’s’ achievements in protecting patients from harm and error in the hospital. The Leapfrog Group assigns an “A,” “B,” “C,” “D,” or “F” grade to general hospitals across the country based on over 30 national performance measures reflecting errors, injuries, accidents and infections, as well as systems hospitals have in place to prevent harm. Hartford Hospital’s inclusion on the A list is even more significant because of its status as a large tertiary care hospital that treats a high number of complex cases.

“While our journey to improve patient safety never ends, we are proud to receive such high marks from Leapfrog for our efforts, especially during these difficult times,” Ajay Kumar, MD, FACP, SFHM, Executive Vice President and Chief Clinical Officer for Hartford HealthCare. “This achievement is a testament to our colleagues’ hard work and commitment to providing the safest and highest quality care to our patients always.”

The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade is the only hospital ratings program based exclusively on hospital prevention of medical errors and harm to patients. The grading system is peer-reviewed, fully transparent and free to the public. Grades are updated twice annually, in the fall and spring.

“An ‘A’ Safety Grade is a tremendous achievement, of which this community should be extremely proud,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “I thank the leadership and workforce for its commitment to prioritizing patients and their safety, especially during these trying times.”
