East Region Leapfrog Grades

An independent national watchdog organization has issued “A” grades for safety at four Hartford HealthCare hospitals in its latest round of national rankings.

For the spring 2022 grades, William W. Backus Hospital received an “A” Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade and Windham Community Memorial Hospital received a “B.”

Hartford Healthcare East Region Vice President of Medical Affairs, Abbie Courtemanche, DO, said, “Leapfrog is a national watchdog organization of employers and other purchasers, and is recognized as the toughest standard-setter for healthcare safety and quality.”

This national distinction serves as a guide for patients by recognizing hospital achievements in protecting patients from harm and error while they are in the hospital. The Leapfrog Group assigns an “A,” “B,” “C,” “D” or “F” grade to general hospitals across the country based on more than 30 national performance measures that examine errors, injuries, accidents and infections, as well as the systems hospitals have in place to prevent harm to patients.

“We are proud to acknowledge that quality and safety is our top priority and these high ratings for Backus and Windham hospitals are a testament to our staff’s hard work, skill and dedication in delivering this type of care to those we serve,” Courtemanche said.

The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade is the only hospital ratings program based exclusively on the work done by hospitals to prevent medical errors and harm to patients. The grading system is peer-reviewed, fully transparent and free to the public. Grades are updated twice annually, in the fall and spring.
