Don’t Let Fall(s) Upend Your Life

September 14, 2017

Falls, with or without injury, can result in a significant impact on your life.

Don’t let fear of falling limit your daily activities and social engagements — they’re great for both your physical and mental well-being.

Here are a few tips to reduce your risk of falling:

  1. Exercise regularly. Programs like Tai Chi and yoga can improve strength, flexibility, and balance.
  2. Use a walker or cane for increased stability.
  3. Ask your physician or pharmacist to review your prescription and over the-counter medications to reduce side effects and interactions.
  4. Have your eyes checked by an eye doctor at least once a year.
  5. Reduce hazards in your home by making simple modifications, such as improved lighting.
  6. Reduce the amount of reaching overhead or toward the floor.
  7. Sit in chairs with arm rests to facilitate easy standing.
