Historic Win at Swim Across the Sound

August 04, 2025

Monroe resident Joey Nizzardo completed the challenging 15.5-mile swim across the Long Island Sound in an impressive 6 hours, 2 minutes, and 42 seconds earning a standout finish in one of the region’s most challenging open-water races. This is the third year in row he has won the event.

Not far behind was former champion Nikko Price of Branford, who crossed the finish line at 6 hours, 21 minutes, and 7 seconds.

This year’s Swim Across the Sound event, on Aug. 2, 2025, raised nearly $700,000 with all proceeds dedicated to supporting thousands of individuals battling cancer. Donations help fund vital programs and services — including financial assistance for expenses not covered by insurance. Thanks to the swimmers, boaters, donors and event sponsors, money raised assists these families at a time when they need to focus on their health and well-being.

With seven solo swimmers and 39 relay teams representing Connecticut and states as far as California, Florida, Georgia, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Washington, and Washington D.C., the event drew national participation and was celebrated as a major success.
